The American Society of Safety Professionals or ASSP was first established in 1911 as the American Society of Safety Engineers or ASSE. Its origins trace back from the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire where absence of proper safety measures caused the lives of 146 garment workers. It was only recently in June of 2018 that ASSE was renamed as ASSP. It is a worldwide organization that has about 37,000 professional occupational safety and health (OSH) members. These professionals take charge in supervising, managing, and doing consult and research work on OSH concerns associated with education, all industries, and government. Members of the organization utilize risk-based approaches so workplace injuries, fatalities, and injuries are prevented.
For many years, the American Society of Safety Professionals continues to create initiatives that build the reputation of the OSH profession. It helps develop consensus in industry standards and provides opportunities for continuing education to OSH professionals. The organization is presently working hand in hand with the federal agencies namely the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
